The Ultimate Lactation Cookie Recipe

This recipe is extra special.

It started with an old-fashioned oatmeal cookie that’s been in my family for generations… from my grandma’s apron to my mom’s mixing bowl to me.

I took that tried-and-true family fav and turned it into milk-making powerhouse by adding a few special ingredients known to support lactation.

Enter: the ultimate lactation cookie.

This isn’t just any cookie. It’s a smart cookie.
(and so are you, by the way)

It’s nourishing, chewy, and totally crave-worthy.

What Are lactation cookies?

Simply put - lactation cookies are just regular cookies, but with added milk-boosting ingredients.

They’re made with ingredients called galactagogues… which is just a fancy term for foods or herbs that help increase breast milk production.

The beauty of lactation cookies is they’re an easy way to get several galactagagues into your diet at once, which makes it the perfect snack for breastfeeding and pumping moms!

My go-to trio of galactagagues:
Oats (full of iron and fiber)
Flaxseed (loaded with healthy fats and phytoestrogens)
Brewer’s yeast (rich in B vitamins and minerals)

Why you’ll love These Cookies:

✔️ They’re ridiculously easy to make (no fancy equipment).
✔️ They taste like your favorite oatmeal cookie… with benefits.
✔️ They’re a comforting snack when your body’s doing a lot.
✔️ They make you feel like you’re doing something good for yourself… while eating a cookie.

This recipe has become a staple in my home and a little gift I love sharing with other moms in the trenches.

Can anyone eat them?

Yes! The whole family can enjoy them.

While they’ve got milk-nourishing ingredients for moms, the ingredients are superfoods in their own right so everyone can enjoy the goodness.

The Best Lactation Cookie Recipe

Dry Ingredients

3 1/2 cups whole rolled oats

1 1/4 cup all purpose flour

3/4 cup brown sugar, packed

1/4 cup white sugar

1 package instant pudding mix (3.4 oz), any flavor

2 tablespoons flax seed meal

2 tablespoons brewers yeast

1 tablespoon baking soda

1/2 cup mix-ins, optional (chocolate chips, m&ms, etc. )

Wet Ingredients

8 tablespoons butter, melted

2 eggs, whisked

Recipe Steps

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C)

  2. Combine the dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl.

  3. Add the melted butter and whisked eggs to the dry ingredients.

  4. Mix together until a dough forms.

  5. Separate into 24 individual cookies on a non-stick cookie sheet.

  6. Bake for 7-8 minutes.

Additional Notes:

You can use any flavor of instant pudding mix you like. We've used vanilla, butterscotch, chocolate, and pumpkin spice with great success!

Dairy Free Option: If you need to omit the dairy, you can use coconut oil instead of butter.  Also, you can use the Jello brand of instant pudding mix because it’s dairy free!

Gluten Free Option:  If you’re in need of a gluten free lactation cookie recipe, simply substitute the all-purpose flour in the recipe with gluten free flour. Note: brewers yeast and oats may contain traces of gluten.

Can I freeze lactation cookies?

Yes! The lactation cookies freeze beautifully, and so does the dough.

They can last up to 6 months in the freezer.

How many lactation cookies should I eat per day?

Everybody is different in how they respond to galactagagues.

We suggest you start with 2 per day, give it a few days to see how your body responds, and adjust as needed.
