So, how do you find this unicorn of a pediatrician? Start by asking around for recommendations and then set up a pre-birth meet and greet to suss out their bedside manner.

  2. Why did you choose pediatrics?

  3. Are you board-certified from the American Board of Pediatrics?

  4. What are your thoughts on _____? (ask about health care or parenting topics that are important to you. These can include breastfeeding support, antibiotic use, vaccines,  circumcision, etc.)

  5. Do you have separate areas for sick and well-child visits?

  6. What happens if my child gets sick after hours?

  7. Is telehealth available?

  8. Is there a nurse line to answer routine questions?

  9. What hospitals are you affiliated with and/or will you be able to visit my newborn in the hospital?

  10. Is this a group practice? Will another physician or registered nurse cover for you at times?

 
 

At the end of the day, the BEST pediatrician for your family is one who fits your needs, makes you feel comfortable, and won't judge you when you show up in your pajamas.
