29 Things To Put In Your Nursing Basket

Technically, all you need to breastfeed are your boobs and your baby! However, there are SOME items that can make your marathon breastfeeding sessions more comfy, cozy, and relaxing…

Enter - the nursing basket!

A nursing basket is a simple bin filled with a collection of your favorite breastfeeding essentials.

It’s super convenient because you can easily move it around with you and all your breastfeeding goodies are always within an arm’s reach.

I always recommend pregnant moms create a nursing basket for themselves when they’re getting the house ready for baby and preparing to breastfeed.

Pro-Tip: A customized breastfeeding basket makes an absolutely FABULOUS gift for a new mom. You can stuff it with all your personal favorites!

Best Basket to Use

Any basket, bin, tote, or bag you have around the house would work!

I absolutely love THESE bags because you can fit SO MUCH stuff in them. I literally use mine all the time. (and they’re SO cheap!)

What to put in your nursing basket

  • Burp Cloths - perfect for the random messes from spit up or spilled milk.

  • Lanolin - During the early weeks I recommend moms apply lanolin before and after every nursing session to keep their nipples in good shape when baby’s learning to latch.

  • Water Bottle - It’s important to drink to thirst and to not become dehydrated as that can negatively affect milk supply. Try to use a water bottle that’s easy to open with one hand.

  • Prenatal Vitamins - I love the idea of keeping these in your basket so you don’t forget to take them. (you need to keep taking them daily while breastfeeding) Our favorite are THESE. They’re the most complete with 25+ vitamins and minerals and are the one ones that are 100% organically-sourced.

  • Nursing Cover - Always keep one close by in case you get some unexpected company and would like to cover up. Get a FREE nursing/pumping cover from Udder Covers (and just pay shipping) by using the code: MILKOLOGY1 at checkout!

  • Hand Lotion

  • Soothie Gel Pads

  • Diapers | Wipes | Rash Cream

  • Remote - For tv, fans or light fixtures

  • Baby Carrier - It helps to keep this close by in case you’d like to get up and move around while you nurse.

  • Blankets - One for you and one for baby to keep you warm.

  • LaVie Lactation Massager – A little tool that increases milk flow while breastfeeding and pumping. Perfect to use at every session!

  • Breast Milk Bags - THESE ones are the least likely to leak. Moms rave about them.

  • A Book - Our favorite book for postpartum moms is The Fourth Trimester.

  • Paper/Pen - You never know when an idea will strike!

  • Nursing Pads - Get 10 FREE pairs of reusable, washable breast pads by using the coupon code: MILKOLOGY1 at checkout. (and just pay for shipping)

  • Phone and Charger

  • Rattle/Toy

  • A Trash Bag - for the diaper and wipes.

  • Haakaa - You can collect extra milk on the other side while you breastfeed to add to your freezer!

  • Lip Balm

  • Yummy Snacks - Anything tasty and portable! (granola bars, nuts, lactation cookies, dried fruit, trail mix, jerky, popcorn, nuts)
