How Fast Do Lactation Cookies Work?

Milk supply is one of the biggest concerns among breastfeeding moms.

A galactagogue is a Greek word for something you ingest— whether it's food or herbs — that’s believed to promote or increase breast milk supply.

A lactation cookie is a super popular snack among breastfeeding moms.

They usually contain 3 galactagogue ingredients: oats, brewers yeast, and flax seed.

Disclaimer:
The absolute non-negotiable to maintaining and increasing milk supply is removing plenty of milk… and often.  Galactagogues will not work without adequate and frequent milk removal.

If you’re concerned about your milk supply, you should see an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant).

Do Lactation Cookies Work?

Although there’s no research confirming their effectiveness, there’s a large amount of anecdotal evidence and product reviews that show many nursing moms have increased their milk supply after eating lactation cookies.

Lactation Cookie Galactagogues, Explained

Oats

Contains beta-glucan (a fiber) that increases prolactin, the hormone responsible for milk production.

Flax seed

Contains phytoestrogens, which mimics estrogen in your body.  Helps to regulate the hormones involved in lactation.

Brewers Yeast

A super food that contains B vitamins, iron, and a bunch of other minerals that give you more energy and has a positive effect on your mood.  Low iron negatively impacts milk supply so brewers yeast increases your iron levels.

How many lactation cookies should I eat in a day?

Eat 1-2 per day.  You can add them to your diet as soon as you notice a dip in your supply or have the need to increase your supply.

How fast do lactation cookies work?

Every mother is different and results vary.  Most women notice a difference by day 2 of consuming lactation cookies.  Some notice effects in a couple hours.

Did you know?

You can’t change the amount of fat in breast milk, but you CAN change the type of fat.

So be sure to add good, healthy fats to your diet whenever possible.

Studies show that maternal levels of DHA (one of the most important types of omega-3s) DIRECTLY influences the levels of DHA in breast milk.

So take a daily, high-quality DHA fish oil supplement to ensure you and baby are getting enough.

We love THIS gummy DHA supplement, because it tastes like strawberries (and not yucky fish oil).
